Officially the Principality of Andorra, a landlocked country of southwestern Europe in the eastern Pyrenees, on the Iberian Peninsula, with Spain to its south and France to its north. Thought to have been founded by Charlemagne, it was under the counts of Urgell until 988, when the Diocese of Urgell took it over. A charter of 1278 made it a polity, and it was a lordship within the Principality of Catalonia until 1715.
