Mother church of Armenia built in the 4th century
The mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church, in the city known both as Vagharshapat and as Etchmiadzin (Ejmiatsin), Armenia. Built around the start of the fourth century, it is usually taken to be ancient Armenia's first cathedral, and often called the oldest cathedral in the world.

Art museum, archive, research institute in Yerevan, Armenia
Officially the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, the largest centre for keeping, studying and spreading knowledge of Armenian manuscripts, at once museum, archive and research institute. It holds the biggest collection of Armenian manuscripts anywhere.

Greco-Roman colonnaded building in Armenia
A colonnaded building of classical design in Garni, a village of central Armenia, east of Yerevan at a distance of some 30 km (19 mi). Its order is Ionic, and it is the most famous monument, and the emblem, of Armenia before Christianity.

Cathedral in Armenia
A medieval Armenian cathedral, now ruined, near Vagharshapat (Ejmiatsin). Built in the seventh century, it was known for its round outer shape, found nowhere else in medieval Armenian building, and for inner piers carrying several storeys topped by a dome.

Memorial complex dedicated to the victims of the Armenian genocide
Armenia's official memorial to those killed in the Armenian genocide, raised in 1967 on Yerevan's Tsitsernakaberd hill. Each year on 24 April, Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, thousands of Armenians come here to remember them.

Officially the Republic of Armenia, a landlocked country of the Caucasus, in the Armenian highlands of West Asia. Its neighbours are Georgia on the north, Azerbaijan on the east, Turkey on the west, and to the south Iran and Nakhchivan, an exclave of Azerbaijan. Yerevan is its capital, its biggest city and its financial centre.
