Maya archaeological site in Belize
A large Maya archaeological site in what is now Belize's Cayo District. Xunantunich and the town of San Ignacio lie about 40 kilometres (25 mi) to its north, and the Macal River is 15 km (9.3 mi) away.

Maya ruins in the west of Belize, in Cayo District, roughly 70 miles (110 km) west of Belize City. They crown a ridge over the Mopan River, well within sight of Guatemala, whose border is 0.6 miles (1 km) to the west.

Archaeological site in Belize
A Mesoamerican archaeological site in Orange Walk District, northern Belize, once a major Maya city. Its name is pre-Columbian: early Spanish missionaries recorded it, and Maya inscriptions over a thousand years older give it as Lam'an'ain.

What remains of an ancient Maya city in Belize District. Belize City lies about 50 kilometres (31 mi) to its south, and the Caribbean shore about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) to its east; the site itself covers about 8 square kilometres (3.1 sq mi).

Maya site in the Cayo District of Belize
A Maya site near San Ignacio, in Belize's Cayo District: the palatial hilltop home of an elite Maya family. Most of the major building is Classic period, but people lived there continuously from as early as 1200 BCE, in the Early Middle Formative, which makes it one of the oldest recognisably Maya sites in western Belize.

At 1,124 m (3,688 ft), the top of Belize, on the Maya Divide, the crest of the Maya Mountains in the country's southwest.
