A string of ten oases in the southern Sahara in north-east Niger, stretching about 75 km (50 mi) north to south and only 1–5 km (0.62–3.11 mi) across. They lie on the east edge of the Ténéré desert, between the Aïr Mountains to the west and the Tibesti Mountains to the east, and between Lake Chad to the south and the Fezzan to the north.

Libya lies to its northeast, Chad to its east, Nigeria to its south, Burkina Faso and Benin to its southwest, Mali to its west and Algeria to its northwest. Its almost 1.27 million km² (490,000 mi²) of land make it Africa's sixth-biggest country and, after Chad, the continent's second-biggest landlocked nation.
