Governed by France as an overseas department and region, an island of the Indian Ocean counted within the African region. Belonging to the Mascarene Islands, it lies approximately 679 kilometres east of Madagascar, and southwest of Mauritius by 175 kilometres (94 nmi). In January 2026 its population stood at 910,985.
