Officially the Independent State of Samoa, a Polynesian island country in Oceania, in the South Pacific, made up of two main islands, two smaller inhabited ones, and several smaller uninhabited islands, the Aleipata Islands among them. American Samoa lies 64 km to its east, Tonga 889 km and Fiji 1,152 km to its southwest, Wallis and Futuna 483 km to its west, Tuvalu 1,151 km to its northwest, Tokelau 519 km to its north, Hawaii 4,190 km to its northeast and Niue 610 km to its southeast.
