A cave system in Slovenia, placed on UNESCO’s list of natural and cultural World Heritage Sites in 1986. It is an important underground phenomenon of the Karst Plateau and of Slovenia, and after Slovenia became independent of Yugoslavia in 1991 the country committed itself to actively protecting the area.

Officially the Republic of Slovenia, a Central European country. Its neighbours are Austria (north), Hungary (northeast), Croatia (south and southeast) and Italy (west), and to the southwest it has a 46.6-kilometre (29.0 mi) coast on the Adriatic.
